Outsider Art Inside the Beltway

  • Art Enables 2204 Rhode Island Avenue Northeast Washington, DC, 20018 United States (map)

Area’s largest exhibition of outsider, folk, and self-taught art, featuring both locally and nationally selected artists.

Beginning September 8, 2018, and running through October 19, 2018, Art Enables—a studio/gallery dedicated to creating opportunities for artists with disabilities to make, market, and earn income from their original and compelling artwork—will host the 12th annual exhibit “Outsider Art Inside the Beltway” (OAIB). OAIB showcases self-taught, folk, and outsider artwork created by artists living and working throughout the U.S. Collectors, enthusiasts, and aspiring artists are invited to view the exhibit during its opening reception on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Art Enables Studio. Light refreshments and wine will be provided. The opening reception is free and open to the public.

Now in its 12th year, OAIB began as a way for D.C.-area groups working with self-taught artists to exhibit together. Six years ago, Art Enables opened the show nationally and invited over two dozen groups to participate. This year, the open call expanded to include independent self-taught artists as well as national organizations from across the U.S. Participating organizations include Pure Vision Arts (New York), Imagine That! (Missouri), Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts (Minnesota), Matheny Arts Access (New Jersey), as well as annual local favorites from Studio In-Sight(Bethesda), Bethesda Health and Rehab (Bethesda), Saint Elizabeth’s (D.C.), Arundel Lodge (Maryland), VisAbility Art Lab (Rockville), CREATE Arts Center (Silver Spring), and Make Studio (Baltimore), along with 7 independent self-taught artists.

OAIB has had such success that it has now grown into three gallery spaces at Art Enables, and features artists from across the nation alongside the resident artists of Art Enables. The show continues to be an excellent introduction for a community curious about outsider and folk art or looking to start their own collection with a selection of affordable art in a wide array of styles.

“Outsider Art Inside the Beltway” 2018 is curated by Art Enables Studio and Gallery Manager, Allie Frazier.
